I Eat Sauerkraut (Almost) Every Day…
I post a lot on my instagram story about sauerkraut. I eat this before anything else usually early in the morning! I get a plethora of responses all the way from “Ew I don’t know how you do that” to “What is this and why is it beneficial for your health?”
What Does It Taste Like
If you can handle apple cider vinegar then you can surely handle sauerkraut! It’s not necessarily the most desirable taste. Day 1 is the hardest but I can assure you that it gets so much easier after that. The first time I tried sauerkraut I didn’t love it but I also didn’t hate it. For whatever reason the second day I was totally fine with it and it didn’t bother me in the slightest. Now I have it almost everyday right when I wake up.
For me, I feel great knowing that I am immediately supporting my gut health by providing a nutrient rich, natural probiotic.
Benefits Of Fermented Foods
Sauerkraut is a fermented foods and fermented foods help to feed the good bacteria in our gut. They are a nutrient rich probiotic that helps balance the gut flora, lower inflammation and modulate the immune system.
Personally, I feel less bloated and experience better digestion when I incorporate fermented foods into my diet!
Who Can Fermented Foods Help
Fermented foods are extremely beneficial for people with autoimmune disorders. It is also extremely helpful for people with other health conditions like alzheimer’s, diabetes, depression, anxiety, cancer and so much more!! Supporting a healthy gut microbiome will do more for your health in 2018 than any fad diet or workout regimen.
“Liv can’t you just take a probiotic?”
Short answer: NO
A lot of probiotics on the shelves are shit. Let’s all be honest and agree that it is much better to have the real thing than some chemically made product in a lab.
Probiotics are extremely beneficial and they have been used for centuries to keep people healthy and thriving. They help build the foundation of a healthy gut microbiome which has been linked to almost every disease, disorder and illness known to humankind! It’s easy to ferment your own foods but if you don’t want to take the time to ferment your foods than you’re in luck! There are so many options at any grocery store you already shop at! My personal favorites are sauerkraut, kimchi and yogurt.
